O. R. Colan Associates is taking the “graying” of the right-of-way industry seriously, and the company is rolling out an innovative approach to cultivating new talent. To promote its Junior Agent/Appraiser training program at college career fairs, ORC sent delegates to three universities – two in Ohio and one in Virginia - just last week, and the company is more and more represented at similar fairs nationwide.

“We sent representatives to events sponsored by Ohio Dominican University in Gahanna, OH (Columbus), John Carroll University in University Heights, OH (Cleveland), and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA,” said Marketing Director and Proposal Manager Kevin C. Robison. “Late last year, we were represented at Stony Brook University in New York (Stony Brook), and, later this year, we will attend fairs in the Carolinas, Texas, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas, and elsewhere – really everywhere we have a presence.”

Colan Associates joined with the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) to develop and deliver a panel discussion on “Opportunity Corridor: What’s Next?” held at the prestigious City Club of Cleveland. The panel, moderated by Chief Operating Officer Steve Toth, addressed many of the future issues and challenges associated with development within the corridor once the roadway is constructed. SMPS arranged for a diverse forum of high-level panelists, including Marie Kittredge, Executive Director of the Opportunity Corridor Partnership; Myron Pakush, District Deputy Director of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT); Debra Janik, Senior VP, Real Estate and Business Development of the Greater Cleveland Partnership; Jeffrey Patterson, CEO and Safety Director of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA); and Robert Jaquay, Associate Director of The Gund Foundation.

ORC Welcomes Marla Britton to Lead Florida Operations

O. R. Colan Associates, LLC (ORC) is pleased to announce the hiring of Marla Britton as Senior Project Manager for our operations in Florida. Ms. Britton has been involved in real estate valuation and RW consulting for 25 years, working primarily in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota. She is a 20-year member of the International Right of Way Association (IRWA), and she earned IRWA’s prestigious SR/WA designation in 2002.

Ms. Britton is a graduate from the University of Illinois with a BS in Agriculture and, later, the University of Wisconsin with an MS in Education – Professional Development. She is a certified general appraiser in six states, including Florida, and a long-time member of the Appraisal Institute, the governing professional association for the appraisal field. As an appraiser, she has high levels of experience with many complex property types, including office buildings, shopping centers, apartment complexes, marinas, hotels, restaurants, business/industrial parks, air rights, avigation easements, utility easements, conservation easements, special purpose properties, developmental land, self-storage facilities, agricultural lands, grain and dairy operations, and light and heavy industrial facilities. She has also been an active member in the appraisal community, serving as the Chair of the Wisconsin Real Estate Appraisers Board and an instructor/mentor to the next generation of appraisers.

“The Florida market is very important to us, and we are committed to expanding our presence there,” explains Chief Operating Officer Stephen J. ORC Awarded VDOT Virginia Beach Projects

In August 2015, O. R. Colan Associates (ORC) was awarded a task order contract by the Virginia Department of Transportation for roadway improvements associated with the I-64/I-264 and the I-264/Route 190 (Witchduck Road) interchanges in Virginia Beach.

ORC will provide project management, appraisals, negotiations, and relocation assistance for 59 parcels, with a scheduled completion date of April 1, 2017. Property uses within the combined 3.8 miles of the commercial interchanges range from medical and office facilities to mixed retail uses. The project is designed to relieve heavy congestion and improve traffic operation from westbound I-64 to eastbound I-264 with the construction of new ramps, overall widening, and new system of collector-distributor roads.

ORC Awarded Appraisal Contract with Central Ohio Transportation Authority; begins new partnership with City of Columbus

In June 2015, O. R. Colan Associates (ORC) was awarded a contract by the City of Columbus to provide appraisal services for a Central Ohio Transportation Authority (COTA) sidewalk improvement initiative. The award also represents the culmination of months of relationship building and the beginning of an exciting partnership with a new client for ORC.

The overall COTA initiative includes three separate components: Dierker Road, Kenny Road, and East Campus View Boulevard. ORC will provide appraisals for the sidewalk improvement component along East Campus View Boulevard. This 0.59 mile long component is located north of the I-270 Outer Belt and east of US Route 23. It encompasses two streets and involves the placement of new sidewalk along both sides of East Campus View Blvd, from US. 23 to Huntington Park, and the replacement of sidewalk along both sides of the northern half of Huntington Park Dr., south of E. Campus View Blvd. The project will impact 21 parcels and a total of 13 separate ownerships. Property uses along the commercial corridor range from large office facilities to mixed retail uses.

“It’s always exciting to win work with a new client,” explained ORC’s Director of Appraisal Services Eric Kirk, MAI, SRA. “We feel we’ve developed a good relationship with the City of Columbus, and we look forward to additional collaboration on future projects.”
