When ORC’s Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Carmen Johnson, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, she faced challenges that extended far beyond her physical health. Through treatment, recovery, and the emotional realities of survivorship, her experience revealed just how meaningful it can be to have someone who truly understands what you’re going through.
She has since turned that experience into action as the Founder and Board Chair of Common Path Network (CPN), a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to connecting people navigating illness with others who have walked similar paths.
A Journey That Inspired Change
Carmen’s journey included a double mastectomy, radiation, and reconstructive surgeries, alongside significant personal losses. Each experience brought its own challenges, shaping her perspective on recovery, resilience, and the importance of support.
Beyond the physical challenges of treatment, Carmen experienced the emotional impact of adjusting to life after her diagnosis. While attending a friend’s wedding following her mastectomy, she struggled with feelings about her appearance and the changes her body had undergone.
Those experiences helped Carmen recognize how valuable it can be to connect with someone who has faced similar challenges.
A Mission Born from Experience
Inspired by her own journey and her grandmother Myra’s lifelong commitment to helping others, Carmen established CPN around a simple belief: no one should have to navigate illness alone.
Myra spent years advocating for families affected by mental illness, demonstrating the power of community and shared understanding. That legacy, combined with Carmen’s personal experience, helped inspire CPN’s mission.
The organization aims to connect individuals facing a diagnosis, treatment, or caregiving responsibilities with others who have experienced similar circumstances.
“A diagnosis can make you feel alone even when you’re surrounded by people who love you. Sometimes what helps most is talking with someone who has been there. Common Path Network exists to make that connection easier to find, free of charge, for anyone who needs it. Our goal is simple: no one should have to face a life-changing diagnosis alone.” – Carmen Johnson, Founder and Board Chair, Common Path Network
Creating Connections That Matter
As CPN continues to grow, the organization is working alongside Carolina Breast Friends, its founding partner for the first phase of development.
CPN is currently in its first phase of development, gathering insights directly from individuals affected by breast cancer. With support from Carolina Breast Friends, the organization is inviting community members to participate in interviews and a survey this fall to better understand what makes peer connections meaningful.
The insights gathered during this phase will help shape a future matching platform designed to connect individuals who have navigated similar experiences. While the platform is still in development, this early research is helping CPN build a resource centered on the needs of the people it hopes to serve.
Supporting the Next Chapter
What began as a deeply personal journey has grown into a mission to make support more accessible to people navigating life-changing illnesses.
As Common Path Network continues its initial research and development, the organization is seeking support to help bring its vision to life.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Carmen’s story is a reminder that awareness can lead to something more: action that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
